Re: IIGS + PowerMac via AppleTalk

The best way I know of printing to a network printer from a GS is to buy
an old LaserWriter or other AppleTalk-capable PostScript printer. If you
don't buy new, the price isn't prohibitive.

Here's a workaround that will let you use a non-PostScript printer, though.

I just pulled out some software that was in our computer lab at the school
and found one piece called "Freedom of the Press" for the Macintosh. When
I read the docs it stated that it emulated a Laserwriter printer so that
it could be used as a print spooler. I hooked up the IIGS to the network
after getting the spooler running on the mac and using the laserwriter
driver for the IIGS was able to print to any printer that was compatible
with the Mac on the network! This includes networked HP Deskwriter 550C's
as well as a Brother Laser printer that we also have hooked up via a GDT
powerprint! The docs for "Freedom of the Press" also state that any
printer that is Mac compatible can be used whether it is a local
connection or a network connection.

There is not a single mention in the Doc's about being able to print using
a IIGS computer but it works!!! Give it a try if you have a Mac, a
network, a printer, a IIGS, and the correct software on both machines.
