Among the contributions by R.E. Williams in #67, is a paragraph about
Modifying Some Programs to Run on a IIgs. The games mentioned are Karateka
and Drol. The author has discovered that a mod published in issue #37 for
getting the games to run on a IIc works for running them on a IIgs. R.E.
does not present mod details.
What you want is the article by Bill Hamshire on page 10 of ISSUE #37.
The reason Drol does not run on a IIgs (or IIc) is that the program
incorporates the on-ROM disk controller boot code from $C600- $C6Fx. Drol
expects to hook into the old II+, IIe code, not the changed code it reads
on a IIgs or IIc.
Bill Hamshire's method involves, first, editing about 70 bytes on the
game diskette (in Sectors 0 and 1 of Track 0). The second step is to
place a copy of the old ROM boot code on diskette at Sector 11 ($B) of
Track 0. The article lists the code to be entered, lists the old ROM boot
code, and tells how to carry out each step of the modification. (If you
have access to a II, II+, or IIe, you will not need to type in the old ROM
code.)
When the modified Drol is run, the program ends up using a copy of the
old ROM boot code (maintained in the "Language Card RAM" area) instead of
whatever may be at $C600 ... . The program is satisfied; so, IIgs and IIc
users can play Drol.
