I believe the problem was due to excessive heat. The chips would
literally pop out of their sockets (so I was told). You might want to
take the cover off and press down on the chips to make sure they are in
their sockets.
As for an OS, I believe a user group paid a programmer to design a new
one for it. I can, however, recall any specifics about it. Maybe
someone else can?
There was software for it to emulate an Apple ][+. That is the best
you can get (even though it _could_ have been an Apple //e clone (I
guess). Apple added extra's to prevent anyone from utilizing it's new
features (80 columns, better graphics, ect).

No need to apologize, this is as close as you're gonna get to an Apple
III group.
