StyleWriter problems

I have an Apple IIgs connected to a StyleWriter printer.
While the printer prints fine on manual feed, printing using auto
feed causes the following sequence of events:

- open document, AWGS 1.1 (or any other prog. for that matter)
- select print
- select 1 copy, auto feed, click OK
- Status box: "allocating imaging memory"
- Status box: "rendering page data" (or something like that)
- Status box: "printing a copy of page 1"
- at this point, the printer starts up and begins feeding a sheet of paper
- Before the paper gets all the way in, a box pops up:
"Sorry, a serious error has occurred, printing will be canceled"
- click "OK" (my only choice)
- status box: "printing was cancelled"
- printer comes back up and spits out the blank sheet of paper
- I swear loudly

The printer works perfectly when connected to a Macintosh & sys 7.0

It's almost as if the driver doesn't wait long enough for the paper to
feed in, then has a fit when the printer isn't ready soon enough.

I notice the problem is less severe if I turn the gs down to stock speed
(it doesn't always get the error). The problem goes away entirely if I
turn the speed down to 1 mhz, but this is a pain, and makes for slooowwww
printing.

Oh yeah my setup is:
ROM 1, 4 megs ram, TransWarp GS @ 7mhz, System 6.01, StyleWriter I
connected to printer port.

I have tried messing with the port settings, the TransWarp settings,
shift booting, etc... all to no avail

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, or similar experience, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!
