I remember something like that. There were spectators, one third (right
 part if I remember well) supporting you and the two other thirds
 supporting the monsters. The "King", in the middle, went down in the
 arena if you were too good... and he was quite impossible to kill since
 you always had a single sword to fight him.
 Monsters entered by several ( 7? ) doors in front of you, opening
 alternatively. 

: Can anybody tell me what this was called?  Was it indeed released

If I remember well, the name of the game was GLADIATOR.
