   Well, at 4800 baud, if I recall correctly one line of text took
about half a second to be received and drawn. (Roommate's 386/40,
running Telix under Dos). Since I'm a pretty fast reader (roughly 300
wpm for normal stuff, have peaked at near 2000 for a moderate skimming
while on caffeine :), 4800 was just enough not to drive me mad. Cut
that by a factor of 16 for a 300 baud modem-- a line of text would
take a few seconds to display.

   14.4 was livable-- a secreen full of text would pop up in a second
or few, but not sure if a //c could really handle it.

   Zterm was supposed to be a good shareware program for //es & //cs.
Proterm's the best, but is commercial. Vt100 is all you need to do--
any decent unix box supports it it, and it's got enough commands that
you can do pretty much all the fun things for programs like emacs,
screen, news, etc.
