's been some discussion in re subtle differences in wear patterns when
comparing hard drives run flat and those run on their sides...some have
mentioned to chose one orientation and keep to it...problems with trying
to use a hard drive flat after using it on its side for a period (undefined
just how long)...slight diffferences in tracking resulting in wear patterns
and difficulty in recovering data when changing from side to flat orientation.
 
the recommmendation in re backing it up is good advice. generally no problem
using it in one or the other orientation, or changing to side from flat, but
maybe some difficulty in returning to flat from being on its side.
