I have this same problem with my AEHD. I never use 800k disks in this
drive for this very reason.

I never get this--maybe you really do have a hardware problem.

My friend's Apple super drive is actually pickier than my drive. Just
get an external 800k drive for your 800k disk needs. If you are having
problems with 14.4 disks, then consider getting a new drive or just
an Apple (or compatible--they are all made by Sony anyway) drive
mechanism. I've never tried replaceing the mechanism, but others on the net
has with success.
