Alistair is quite correct. Phillips did about 95% of the development
work on the CD, and nearly all of the hard points such as size,
format, capacity, etc. had been decided upon when Phillips ran into
hard economic times and sold the development to Sony. Little was left
to do at that point, and Sony only had to work out some details and
stake their claim as the inventors.
I'm sure the 72 minute limit reason is pure folklore as well. While I
don't have a first-hand fact to replace it, I *do* have a particular
performance of Beethoven's Ninth that runs close to 90 minutes.
