Don't forget about the "game port" I/O.  Analog inputs, digital inputs,
digital outputs, and a strobe.  I once built a "no-slot" Centronics
parallel interface using a 7-bit CMOS counter chip and the game port, BTW.
I'm sure others have done much more impressive things!

Another handy tip is that instead of having to find 150K potentiometers
for paddles and joysticks, you can often use more readily available 100K
pots by adding an extra capacitor.  It's the RC product that counts, 
after all.

There's also cassette port I/O...
