Re: Help transferring ASCII to Apple II via Mac

It's a long shot, but...

The disks you are having trouble _opying...the ones with the BINSCII
files on them...Are those 800k disks or 5.25" disks?

If they are 800k'ers, and you are using MacOS System 7.5 (you said you
were, didn't you...I wasn't paying that close attention...), stick the
offending disk in and see what happens.

Once the disk mounts on the Mac desktop, close it and look at the disk
icon. Make sure that there is a "II" in the center of the disk icon. If
there isn't, then the Mac has pulled one of its dirty little tricks and
stored your ProDOS files on an HFS disk, which ProDOS is unable to read.
If that is the case, then format a fresh 3.5" disk on the ][, and use the
Mac to copy the file from the he HFS disk to the ProDOS disk.

I'm guessing, but that might be your problem.

This reminds me of a dirty little secret of MacOS 7.5. If you use
preformatted disks (most of which are PC format if you buy them that way),
the Mac will very happily put its Mac files onto the MS-DOS disk, even
allowing the HFS filenames (!) and resource forks. You can do this and
not even notice that there is a problem until you try to use the disk on a
system with, say, MacOS 7.1...in which case you'll be up a creek.

Multi file-system compatibility is a nice thing, but it can burn you if
you're not careful. I just wish that the Macintoshes at work would handle
ProDOS disks as well as my GS can handle HFS disks...
