LocalTalk is one option, assuming the machines are not too far away
from each other, and the IIgs has enough memory (1 MB) and at least a
3.5" drive, or better still a hard drive.

The easiest option is to use Mac-based software that can read ProDOS
disks.  With System 7.5, "PC Exchange" can read (and write) files
directly from a ProDOS disk.  With earlier system software, you can use
Apple File Exchange.

All you need then is a program that can deal with AppleWorks files.
ClarisWorks is probably the best option.

No.  (There is no device driver for it.)

Yes.  The IIgs has all the necessary hardware built in (except for the
LocalTalk or PhoneNet drop box).  The file server access software must
be loaded from a GS/OS system disk at boot time, so you will probably
need more software to set this up.

The current IIgs system software (System 6.0.1) comes on a six disk
set: five disks are used for installing the system software (two of
which contain optional music/MIDI software and additional font sizes),
and the other is just a bootable system disk that can be created using
the first three.

The system disks can be used to create a local boot disk that can be
used to access an AppleShare server (or a Mac with File Sharing enabled).

It is also possible to boot a IIgs across a LocalTalk network from an
AppleShare server (version 2.0 or 3.0, not 4.0 or later).
