On the news reader I use (tin), it's <ctrl>-k to enter the kill menu.
It let's you select whether to ignore messages from a particular user 
or those with a particular subject line, and whether the "kill" applies 
to all groups or just the one you are currently reading.

I've gotten a lot of use out of it recently!
