That's my guess. I killed far more RAM than I feel safe admitting like that.

FWIW, there are power supply failure modes that will apply a
substantial overvoltage to the main board, killing essentially
every chip on it.  I did this once when "trying out" a power
supply whose health was unknown, and the board even "crackled"
as it died.  ;-(
