Seeking help/advice on hard drive

Okay guys...

I just bought a PowerMac, and wanted to install a bunch of fonts etc.
from my GS hard drive onto my new machine--I was under the impression
that I could just plug my drive into the mac & I could then just copy to
my heart's content...unfortunately, not only did it _not_ work, but the
mac (or maybe the CMS software I was using) somehow killed my hard
drive. I can't boot from it, and the SCSI driver on my 3.5" System Disk
won't even recognize it. :(

So--I have two questions. First, am I going to have to reformat this
thing from scratch, or is there any way to rescue data (that I'm sure is
still on there somewhere)? And if so, how do I go about doing that when
none of my software even recognizes it? (With the exception of my Apple
High-Speed SCSI card utilities disk) And no, I don't have a backup of
the thing, for which I beat myself soundly last night.

In a related question, if I _do_ have to start from scratch, are there
any suggestions as to how I might be able to set up my GS to work more
easily with my Mac? I'm especially considering networking the two
together so that they can share files (fonts, gifs, text files, etc) and
hardware (especially my printer)?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me...
