At least it has enough kludgy add-on features to make fully compiled
high-level languages feasible (as opposed to compiled-to-interpreted
languages like Apple II Pascal).

It doesn't have to be - that is really only true if you write desktop
programs.  Most of the software I write for the IIgs runs under the
ORCA/Shell text environment.  The only parts of the toolbox I regularly
use for these are the Memory Manager and some of the other low-level
toolsets.  I often call GS/OS directly as well.

Back when I first got my IIgs, I was only using it in 8-bit mode,
learning about all the neat new features such as the Super Hi-Res
graphics.  I didn't really get interested in the native side for a
year or so.
