Whoa - backtrack a bit.

The DeskJet 540 does not have a serial interface.  It only supports a
parallel interface.

The IIgs has no built-in parallel interface.  To connect the 540 to the
IIgs, you will either have to get hold of a parallel interface card
(and corresponding cable - they are different for most brands of Apple
II parallel cards), or get a serial-to-parallel converter with
appropriate cabling.
