HI!
With the demise of GS+, and with II Alive soon to follow, that
leaves only SSII as the only printed publication left dedicated to the
Apple II. I originally was going to name this post as "Best Apple II
magazine of all time", but after a little debate with Joe Kohn, I decided
that "publication" would be better, so not to leave out anyone. The
title is self-explanatory, so please tell us your favorite Apple II
publication of all time, though I never read them, you can include disk
based ones if you wish.
As for me, it's pretty difficult. I was very young when the
majority of the "printed" publcations were out, and didn't read them as
closely and seriously, as I do now. I had Apple Orchard, Nibble, A+,
Incider, and others all around the house through my dad. During my
teens, I read Electronic Games, Compute, etc.... so picking one is
difficult. I will however, instead of picking one, will tell you how I
remember certain issues for certain magazines, and tell you why I like
them. The one thing I like the most as of late, which II Alive and
Incider toward the end didn't do, was have an editorial. I felt that
gave the magazine a personality, rather than just a bunch of articles
thrown together. I also liked some humor which A+, II Alive, Incider/A+
occasionally had, like some April Fool's columns, and a lot of funny
things in columns. I also like it when it seems there is a lot of hard
work put into it, like SSII, Joe Kohn puts a lot of time and deserves a
lot of credit for doing almost everything himself. In fact, I would say all
publications were once like SSII, dedicated, but unlike SSII $$$$$$$ is
very important and money has ended GS+, though from what I hear the
quality was there all the way until the very end, but II Alive and
Incider/A+, unfortuantely, ended (will end in II Alive's case will end) as
shadow's of their former selves due to lack of pages, etc.
I know I haven't really answered all of my own questions, but I
guess the thing to say is that I liked all publications that supported
the Apple II. From those that supported all computers like Compute! to
Apple specific like A+, they were all good in my eyes and when they were
gone, I was disappointed. Hey people, if you haven't gotten to subscribe
to SSII, now's the time, it's the only publication left out there, and
Joe needs all the support he can get. SSII is worth it, go get it!
