Yes, there was an updater to version 4.3 (which immediately follows
4.0.2 - the number was changed to reflect the normal ordering of
AppleWorks versions). At the very least, it would update 4.0.2 to
4.3. It might also update 4.0 or 4.0.1 to 4.3.
I don't know for sure, as I've never seen a copy of it - it wasn't
posted on comp.binaries.apple2, and I've never seen an announcement of
its availability at an FTP site.

It should be available on GEnie. Perhaps someone can check with the
powers that be and see if they can get permission to post it on
Internet in some form?
(It isn't so critical now, as 5.0 and 5.1 are out, but there will be
people who haven't upgraded and want to minimise the bugs.)

No use at all. The 5.1 updater requires AppleWorks 5.0.
