Just a quick point to add here: Greg might be thinking of AppleShare
2.0, which does take over the whole machine.  It also requires Mac
System 6.x, is not compatible with MultiFinder, and won't work with
System 7.0 or later.

AppleShare 3.0 requires System 7.0 or later and is just another
application that you run on the machine.


AppleShare 4.0 and later is similar, but it no longer supports booting
an Apple II over the network (you can still log on and access the
server from an Apple II, but you have to boot locally).
