Washington Apple Pi <http://www.wap.org/info/> or
<mailto:info@tcs.wap.org> has been running a 14-line Apple II-based BBS
for years. Currently it's 12 lines, supporting 300-28800, and holding
around 2.5GB of downloadable files (128MB for A2, the rest Mac and
cross-platform.) It's based on ModemWorks 3.1, but isn't part of a
commercially-availble BBS package. It's mostly my own custom code.
We've run some experiments using ProLine as a multi-line board, but the
expense of trying to pull something like this together is pretty huge.
Start with a spare Mac running File Sharing, separate boot volumes for
each of the ProLine systems (since they WON'T share common data nicely
except for message conferences and downloadable files), and patch
BASIC.System to deal with file permissions somewhat gracefully. It'll
never be perfect, and in fact occasional data recovery will be necessary,
but hey -- there are plenty of good Mac backup solutions for the file
server.
