Micro$oft owns the copyright on BASIC in general.  The copyright on the
Applesoft ROM in the ][ lists both Microsoft and Apple.

Applesoft is a heavily customized version of Microsoft BASIC.  At first
glance, I'd say Apple licensed Microsoft BASIC, then used it to write
their own version, better known as Applesoft.

This is a guess.  But I'm pretty sure the Applesoft code came from Apple,
not from Microsoft, in spite of the Microsoft copyright inside every Apple ][.
