AppleWorks has alway supported larger files, you just need the memory. If
you are using a RamWorks (AuxCard) type memory, versions earlier than 3.0
required patching. AppleWorks is currently at version 5.1. AW 5.x requires
256k in order to run (but includes 100's of new features compared to plain
AW3.x). I understand AW 4.x is available for those who don't have 256k or
more of memory. AppleWorks upgrades can be purchased from Quality
Computers.

Again, I believe the amount of memory is your biggest issue. AppleWorks
spreadsheets can handle 9999 rows by 127 columns (assuming you have more
than 256k of memory). Again, this refers to AW 3.x.

I don't remember if Excel supports the DIF format (which AppleWorks can
export too). The only way I know to do this is to read it into MSWorks
(which supports AppleWorks spreadsheets) and then save it as either Excel
or SYLK.
