Hello Clay,

The melody is the tune and is the progression of single notes in a
rational manner. In "pop" music, its the series of notes to which the
words of a song are are assigned. Contrasted with that, the harmony ( the
chords used ) is the rational combination of several notes used to
support that melody.

For example, "My Country 'Tis Of Thee" has a melody with which I am
certain you are familiar. To make the entire selection sound as one
would expect it to sound, this melody ( the tune ) has harmony ( the
chords ) which, when employed, present the entire composition. Each may
be presented alone. However, the "complete picture" is available only
when the melody and harmony are presented collectively.

I hope this illustration will help. Please don't hesitate to
e-mail additional questions and/or inquires. I'll be happy to respond.

	Perry
