It is listed on page 210 of the System 6.0 Programmer's Reference.

When looking for a free location in the resource fork, the Resource
Manager assumes the fork's free list is valid. If the large free area
at the end is missing, fatal system error $1E42 now occurs (previously
a resource would be placed at offset zero in the fork).

In summary: the resource fork of some file is damaged. If the problem
only occurs when booting from the hard drive, it sounds like the
system software is damaged, or some other utility in the system folder
is damaged.

Does the problem also happen when booting from a floppy with hard disk
drivers installed? If so, does it only happen when Finder starts
(i.e. the boot goes as far as removing the "Welcome to the IIgs" logo)?

If so, the most likely culprit is the "Desktop" file, which is a
normally invisible file in the Icons folder of the boot volume (and
there may be similar files on other volumes).

To avoid this crash, you will have to boot into a startup application
other than Finder, and use a utility program to delete the Desktop
file on the hard drive.
