Robert it sounds like you have an ICON conflict.  I believe that there
are two ICONS on your system that match any file.  Try renaming the
ICON folders on all your partitions except your boot partition and see
if that fixes the problem.  Then rerename the ICON folders one at a
time and reboot and localize the problem ICON that way.

Nick it sounds like you have a munged screen saver causing the red and
yellow lines.
