The early //e's came with cases similar to ][ pluses, with the sprayed on 
finish and black plastic snap things to hold on the lid, and the grey-green 
colored keycaps with white letters. Around the end of '83 the kind with the 
molded plastic cases and italic letters on beige keycaps came out. These both
used keyswitches with white posts. Then there are later keyboards that have
keyswitches with round black posts. This must be the platinum style. I have
one with beige keycaps in my spare parts pile. It has a dead key and I
don't have a spare switch of that type to replace it. This keyboard has a
bit of a mushy feel I think.

That covers the what, as to the why, who knows?
