Zip Technology Hard Card - HELP!

A colleague bought a "Hard Card" from Zip Technology for his Appe IIe a
couple of years ago. It's quite a nice little device - a 2.5" Connor 20
Meg hard drive mounted on a card which plugs into any slot. The drive
has recently suffered a head crash. He has been able to replace the
drive itself with an identical second hand unit which he bought from a
local 2nd hand computer dealer (not bad value at $40!). His big problem
now is that he can't format it.
Does anyone out there know anything about these cards from Zip Tchnology?
Did they use the SCSI or IDE protocol? He originally received the drive
from Zip pre-formatted, without any documentation or utility software. He
has tried Copy II Plus and Prosel's Cat Doctor, but I suspect he needs
something else to overcome the existing MS-DOS format presently on the
card since both of these program are choking. I'm willing to try Apple's
SCSI Utilities which came with my HS SCSI card but I have strong doubts
if this will work on an IDE device.
Can anyone out there help?
