Mouse card: NO. You cannot properly use an Apple IIe mouse card in a
ROM 3 IIgs. It will work in a ROM 1, if you disable the internal
mouse firmware. In a ROM 3, the mouse card will work for 8-bit
software (again, if you disable the internal mouse firmware), but
native software only supports an ADB mouse.

You should just get an Apple Desktop Bus mouse - the same type used on
all current Macs.

Graphics Tablet: apart from really ancient software, there probably
isn't much that supports it. It might be possible to write a driver
that allows it to be used to control the mouse cursor in GS/OS programs.

No to both. The IIgs game port only supports paddles or joysticks,
not mice. (The IIc is the only Apple II with a combined
mouse/joystick port.)

A 4MB RAM card currently sells new for about US$130. Sequential
Systems has two versions: one fully populated 4MB one, and a second
that has 4MB and can be expanded to 8MB (only 7MB of which can be used
on a ROM 3).

You can use most ADB keyboards on the IIgs. The major exception is
the Apple Ergonomic keyboard (the split one).

My favourite is the original Apple Extended Keyboard.

Leave it set to "Your Card". You only need to set slot 7 to
"AppleTalk" if you are using rather old software that assumes the IIgs
AppleTalk firmware lives in slot 7. If you do this, AppleTalk
occupies both slots 1 and 7.

Must be set to AppleTalk to boot from AppleTalk.

Hm. It is a little unclear exactly what you did. I haven't actually
set up an AppleShare server to enable a IIgs to boot over a network,
so I don't know the exact steps. I believe that you need to do the
following:

1. Make sure you have matching versions of the IIgs System Software
and Apple II Setup disk, ideally System 6.0.1 (six disk set) and
Apple II Setup version 3.0. The IIgs should be set up with AppleTalk
selected for slot 1, and the Phonenet connector plugged into the
Printer port. Set the startup slot to "scan" (or slot 5).

2. Use Apple II Setup to set up the necessary stuff on the server (I have
no idea what exactly is involved for this part).

3. Boot the IIgs Installer. Click on "Customize". Use the Installer to
create a IIgs system disk. I can't remember the exact option - you
either create an 800k system disk, then add "Local Network Boot" to it,
or there might be an "AppleShare on 800k disk" option.

4. Boot this disk. Use it to log on to the server. If you cannot,
there may be a physical problem. Once you have succeeded logging
on to the server (as a registered user with access rights to
everything), launch the IIgs Installer, choose "Customize", and
install the IIgs system software onto the server.

5. Change the IIgs startup slot to "AppleTalk", and try booting from the
   server.

I'll have to do a little research to find more details on this. It
may be documented in the AppleShare manual, but I don't have
AppleShare (or a Mac).

You can't boot from the RAM disk until it has been formatted. You can
do this by booting a IIgs system disk and using the Initialize or
Erase command from Finder. This must be done before attempting to
install the system software on the RAM disk.
