What program is he printing from? Assuming AppleWorks, it sounds like
the codes for the interface card have been entered wrong.
What serial interface is he using to connect to the printer?
Assuming it is an Apple IIgs, IIc, or a Super Serial Card in a IIe,
the correct character sequence is "Control-I 80N".
Go to "Other Activities", "Specify Information about your Printers",
choose the appropriate printer, then check that the "Interface Codes"
are correct. If not, re-enter them. (To type "Control-I", hold down
the Control key and press the I key.) There should be no spaces or
other control characters in the string.
Another possible problem: if he has a Super Serial Card, it might be
set up to Communication mode instead of Printer mode (SW1-5 should be
OFF and SW1-6 should be ON for printer mode).
Similarly, a IIgs serial port might be set to talk to a modem. Make
sure it says "Device Connected: Printer" in the relevant page of the
Control Panel.
