I had the same symptoms with two SIDER drives. It was the power supply
which was bad. From JDR Microsystems, I ordered a power supply which had
suitable voltages and which was of a size to fit into the SIDER case. They
both work fine now. As a temporary fix, I used an Apple IIe power supply
mounted outside the case and with some extension leads. That also worked
fine, though it was not handy to have an external power supply.

JDR Microsystems (800) 538-5000. Ask for a catalog
