You can avoid damaging the microwave by placing the disk on top of a 
coffee cup filled with water.  You might have to run the oven longer 
though.

My favorite microwave trick is putting a lightbulb in a coffee cup full 
of water and nuking it for 30 - 40 secs.  As the filament heats up 
unevenly it provides a multicolor light show.

Warning:don't try this at home, and if you do, stand back.
