Try telnet!  If FTP is busy, _try telnet_!  TRY TELNET!

Really, use telnet grind.isca.uiowa.edu instead of ftp grind.isca.uiowa.edu

There is a limit of 8 ftp sessions on grind.  There is a _large_ number of
telnet sessions.  Grind isn't just apple2, it is mac, MSDOS, amiga, newton,
etc. archives too so you are competing with those users for ftp.  telnet users
have no competition.

Use telnet and you're connected to the ISCA BBS filesubsytem.  Just use the
prompts at the bottom of the screen to go/do what you want.  Save the ftp
sessions for those who can ONLY do ftp.  (Is there anyone who can ftp but can't
telnet?)
