   I bought mine back in late 1993, and it's always worked just fine
for me. Nice and quiet, whether driving my stereo or a pair of
computer speakers.  

   Are you sure it's the SoundMeister? My GS's power supply makes
tones depending on what the computer's doing-- the way I proved that
was by disconnecting the internal speaker, and not plugging anything
into the soundmeister or normal headphones out. The noise still
occurred, so it was not the fault of any of the sound equipment inside
the GS.

   You might also want to check the SM's control panel to see if the
volume settings are 'normal,' and try the other output from the SM.
