I had no problems either.  If you're connecting a IIgs to a Mac, a simple 
serial cable will do the trick.  I use my Newton's cable to connect my GS to 
my powerbook.  The trick is getting the appleshare software installed on your 
system disk (an ardous task if you have to do it manually :)    ).
