That was the first GS game I ever cracked...couldn't have done it without
a magazine called "Computist". They taught me all the tricks I know...
thanks guys.

Well, here's a file I've put together through the years. It's called
"Apple.tips.txt" and should be available on my ftp site, ftp.stolaf.edu
in pub/apple2/incoming. I just noticed some of the stuff is outdated,
but oh well...Enjoy!

Version numbers are latest as of release. Hints may work
with earlier versions.

Apple IIGS

::::::::::All GS/OS based Applications

:In most GS/OS based applications, pressing <apple>
<control> 2 will show the authors.

::::::::::Alien Mind GS

:To be able to "look around" inside the program's code,
change the three opcodes EE F4 03 (around block $0007) to EA
EA EA. The next time you run it, a simple <control> <reset>
will drop you into machine language. This change should
also work in other programs. ONLY MODIFY BACKUPS!!!

:Early versions of this program are rumored to have this
cheat: Pressing "n" will put you into the next level. This
does not work on my version. (*)

::::::::::AppleWorks GS v1.1 (Claris)

:In AppleWorks GS v1.1, try holding the <option> key when
selecting "About AppleWorks GS". This will bring up
technical information.

:If you press <control> <option> while clicking OK at the
technical information screen (above), you'll "manage your
memory" which reduces fragmentation.

:To use font sizes bigger than 48 points, try holding
<shift> and <option> when selecting "Choose Font".

::::::::::BlackJack Tutor 3.0

:Hold down the <shift> and <option> keys when selecting
"About BlackJack Tutor" from the apple menu. (*)

but is extremely tasteless.

<reset>.

take place immediately, incur a self-test after resizing.

:To boot into the Control Panel and to set the system
standards back to default settings, reboot with <option>
<control> <reset>.

:A better one is to enable Visit Monitor (# from the
monitor), then change all references to 8F 48 00 E1 or
8F 4A 00 E1 so that the 8F is an AF. This causes the CDA
menu to be enabled during the demo or whatever so you can
Visit Monitor and poke around without stopping the demo
from running.

:To change the search filter, just do "7F=F" or "FF=F"
from the IIGS monitor. The final F must be capitalized.

MultiTasking!!!

:To change applications, press <apple> <control> <tab>.
This will cycle you through all open applications (very
useful for ProSel 16 and Photonix II users). You may

Manager. Using both results in very slow Standard File

<option> <shift> <control>.

::::::::::Mazer II

:You can dialogue with beings of Mazer II using the Mouse
and keeping pressed OPTION key (or Open Apple) to choose

compatible. To download in the background, you must be at
2400bps or slower. While transferring a file, hit <apple>
<control> <tab> at the very beginning of the transfer.

::::::::::System 6.0.1 (Apple)

:Hold the <shift> key down while booting to avoid loading
all but the essential system files. This dramatically
speeds up the boot (4 sec @15.5Mhz!). It can also be used to locate problem
INIT's which keep your system from booting
normally.

:Pressing the <control> key while booting overrides the
SetStart Control Panel.

:If a program (such as Test Drive II) doesn't work on your
hard disk, you probably created a folder or filename in
lowercase. System 6 allows this, but it is incompatible
with some older programs.

:The new StyleWriter printer driver will not work very well
on a GS with less than 3 meg of memory.

:To close all open windows, press <apple> <option> W.

:To get a Postscript file from any GS document, press
<apple> F when clicking "Ok" in the LaserWriter driver.
This'll kick out a Postscript file in your */system/drivers
folder.

:To gain some free space on your system disk, you can delete
the file TS3 in the */system/system.setup folder (if you
have a ROM 01 Apple IIGS) and also TS2 (if you have ROM 03).

:If you're using ProDOS 8 v2.0.0 or higher (v2.0.3= current)
on a Vulcan Hard Disk or RamFast SCSI card, look in the
Apple II section of this file for info on how to turn the
auto-mapping of partitions off (may cause conflicts).

:Delete the EasyAccess INIT's (in the */system/system.setup
folder) unless you absolutely need them- otherwise, serious
conflicts may arise.

:System 6.0.1 allows you to move around the desktop using
the arrow keys to selecting different applications/disks.

:System 6.0.1's EasyMount Extension (under the EXTRAS menu)
allows you to 'Make Aliases', allowing you to keep the
original file in the original directory.

:To launch ProDOS 8 v2.0.3 at boot of a System 6.0.1 disk,
press the number '8' very early. If you have ProSEL 8,
follow the following procedure to boot straight into ProSEL
8 from the <8>boot described below: Sort the files so that
PROSEL.SYSTEM appears earlier in the catalog than
BASIC.SYSTEM.

OR

If you do not use any BASIC programs, you could rename
BASIC.SYSTEM to BASIC.SYS (keeping PROSEL.SYSTEM in the Root
Directory). GS/OS will not find BASIC.SYSTEM!

OR

First, duplicate the file "P8" in the */system directory,
calling it P7. Then, rename the file Prosel.system in the
root directory to Prosel.systen. After that, follow the
file P7 with a block editor, and change the .SYSTEM to
Block.Warden!!!) on the 34 block of P7. Finally, follow the
file ProDOS on your boot directory, and change the reference
to "P8" to "P7".

Now, when you boot with the <8> key pressed, you will be
placed directly into ProSEL 8.

::::::::::Test Drive II: The Duel (Accolade)

:To remove the copy protection for archival purposes, change
the following locations on block $16E to $EA: $149, $14A,
$14E, $14F, $167, $168, $16C, $16D. ONLY MODIFY BACKUPS!!!
(Cracked by Zelix- 6/8/91).

:If you wish to put this game on a Hard Disk, you must
search all references to /TD2MASTER/ and change to */
(example:/TD2MASTER/CHALON to */CHALON) or you can just
rename your Hard Disk to /TD2MASTER.

::::::::::Tinies GS!

:To fix level 87, run the following Basic program (be sure
to change the prefix to your game directory!):

        10 D$=CHR$(4)
        20 PRINT D$"PREFIX/THE.TINIES/TINIES.DATAS"
        30 PRINT D$"BLOAD TINIES.TAB,A$1000"
        40 POKE 22211,0
        50 PRINT D$"BSAVE TINIES.TAB,A$1000,L21456"
        60 PRINT "THANKS TO THE ATARI ST FILE... :-)"
        70 END

:To use QuickPath, press <apple> 1-8 (one through eight) for
the path you want.

::::::::::System Disk v4.02

If you have a Vulcan hard disk or RamFast SCSI Card and have
more than two partitions active, whenever you try to run a
ProDOS 8 program, the last two will not run or be
recognized. The culprit is ProDOS 8 v2.0.x. This version
automatically remaps partitions, causing a conflict. You
can turn this feature off by changing the opcode A5 in the
sequence 10 BF C9 A5 D0 07 to 00 (Block $04 byte $1A3).
