Connecting my IIgs and my PC

I'm running linux on my 486, and I need an extra terminal.  My trusty old 
appleIIgs looms next to it on the table.  I am wondering what would be 
involved in connecting the two together.

This is what I think, but I may be wrong:
I could get a serial card for my apple (recomendations?) and connect the 
two via a serial cable.  I could then get a com program for the apple and 
connect to the linux system over the cable.  However, I get the feeling 
that I really dont know what I'm talking about.
