Radio Shack sells a very nice desoldering iron with a big red suction 
bulb on top of it.  Cheap, too.

But before you attempt desoldering "real" chips, I recommend a few things:

  1) practice on a junk board
  2) leave enough time for the solder to melt all the way through
     the hole (I usually count to eight)
  3) most importantly, use a fresh tip (they sell two tips at RS,
                                        get the cheaper one.)

"Tinning" the tip apparently helps, too.
