You're creating this 'untitled folder' on a ProDOS-formatted disk, I presume?

Have you tried viewing the directory on an Apple II? "untitled.folder" is
what you'll see; the spaces are displayed on-screen (similar to the file
names that you can assign in AppleWorks), but are actually periods if you
see the file names through ProDOS itself.
