I don't know the details, but there is an extra "driver" partition that 
gets created when a Mac partitions a SCSI drive that MUST be there for 
a Mac to use the drive.  The Mac's firmware wants to copy the driver for 
the disk and won't mount the drive without the driver.

So, you HAVE to do the partitioning on the Mac so a driver can be installed.
