Well, you probably wouldn't have to use it, but it might be a good habit
to get into.  If you did use it, you wouldn't have to worry about forgetting
to take your disks out of the drives, and although you probably wouldn't
have any problems with the 3.5" disks by just resetting or turning off the
machine, choosing shutdown does make sure that all the files etc. are
closed properly.  I think it also broadcasts a shutdown message so that
anything running that needs to do something special before shutting down
can.
