AW5 label-style reports, Bug?

I am having problems with label reports in Appleworks 5.0.  A label
report will not print correctly, to the printer, screen, or clipboard.

For example, I have this label report (using fieldnames):

where the 1,2,3,6 in column 1 are background text.
But the following print to the screen/clipboard/printer:

So, it is rather obvious that info is being propagated down the lines and
the last field on a line being propagated to the front over that, with
the background text overlaid on top (correctly).

I created the report twice, from scratch, with the same results.  So...
how does one create labels in AW5.  It always worked for me in aw1x-aw4x.
(In fact, aw3,aw4 created labels print OK in aw5, at least in the ones
I've used.)  Just the aw5 created ones are screwy.  My aw5 was patched
to fix the background text in label reports as instucted by Peter Hinchcliffe
(sp?).  I've also tried the Timeout central (basic pgm) patch (which is
the same patch applied by a program instead of manually).

Any suggestions?  Anyone else having problems?

Equipment:  IIe (enhanced), Ramworks III (1 MEg), Zip 8Mhz,
            SSC, SSC, <3>, <4>, Unidisk 3.5 (2), Duodisk, Workstation card
            (appletalk active, logged onto a Appleshare 3.0 server,
             appletalk Laserwriter NT (slot 7) is active printer)
            (AW5 also patched to allow ultramacros on a appletalk machine)
