Does it make sounds at the same time? The original IIe ROM has two
versions of the diagnostics test. Control-SolidApple-Reset gives you
the normal self-test. Holding down OpenApple at the same time gives
you a self-test with sound.
The most likely reason for the self-test being started unexpectedly on
bootup is that you have a joystick plugged in and something is resting
on button 1 (which corresponds to the SolidApple key).
The next most likely reason is that the joystick is faulty and is
randomly reporting that button 1 is down.
The next possibility is a similar fault in the keyboard.
The next possibility is a similar fault in the motherboard.
If you have a joystick, check that there isn't anything pushing
buttons on it. If not, unplug it and see if the problem goes away. If
not, try to get hold of another IIe and swap the keyboards. If that
fails, it is probably a motherboard fault.
