Re: 0.25k Programming Contest!
I'd like to enter this contest but I don't want to start before some
extra things are worked out. I've listed here the rules that seem
to be agreed upon by concensus, all of the offered prizes I'm aware of
and my suggestions for answers to questions that need to be decided
before the contest can begin.
It would be good if we could get a few more prizes and have 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd places. They don't have to be anything great. Maybe someone would
offer to make certificates or something; that would be good enough.
We need a contest coordinator to run the contest, I'd offer but since
I hope to enter I have to pass. So someone who is interested but would
not enter, please step forward.
*-- Rules so far --*
(1) Contest not restricted to games: demos, utilities, etc. welcome
(2) Must run on an enhanced, 128k Apple //e.
(3) May call [Pro]DOS, Applesoft or Monitor routines.
(4) Must come with source code in text format.
(5) 256 bytes maximum object code size.
*-- Prizes so far --*
(1) Either The Complete Shareware Solutions II Collection (Issues 1-12),
a one year free renewal if the winner is already a SSII subscriber,
or a copy of Contacts GS. (Donated by Joe Kohn)
*-- Questions that need to be resolved --*
Does the program have to be loadable at any particular address?
My Suggestion: No, the program may be simply a memory image and may
load at any address. (ie - it does not have to be
a ProDOS 8 System Program, it can simply be a 256
byte memory image saved with BSAVE)
When does the contest start?
My Suggestion: While we need a start date in order to provide enough
time for people to write programs I don't think that
any program written before the start date should be
disqualified.
When does the contest end?
My Suggestion: All entries must be submitted by the day two weeks after
the start date. So if the start date were Friday, April
7, the last day to submit entries would be Friday, April
21. Judging would begin only after the last day to submit
entries.
Where does the entry get sent?
My Suggestion: Programs are entered into the contest by emailing them
to the contest coordinator, who will post them to
comp.binaries.apple2
How are the entries judged?
My Suggestion: The contest coordinator will accept votes by email
starting the day after the last day to submit entries.
Any votes received before that day would be discarded.
Votes will be accepted until one week after the last
day to submit entries, so in the example above, votes
would be accepted by the contest coordinator that he
received between Saturday, April 22 and Friday, April
28 inclusive.
Each vote will name the voters choice of the top three
programs. Each program that receives any vote will
be scored. A first place vote for a program is given
a score of 1, Second place 2, and Third place 3. The
final score of a program will be the average of the
scores of all votes it received. The program with the
lowest average score would place first, the program
with the next lowest average score would place second,
and the next lowest after that third.
Who is going to be the coordinator:
My Suggestion: A volunteer who may not enter the contest.
Who decides upon the start date and end date?
My Suggestion: The coordinator.
---------------
Please comment on these proposed rules so we can make changes. I do
think that we will have to have a coordinator so hopefully someone
will volunteer.
