Downloading software from the 'net and getting it to work.

Can someone out there explain how I download software from the 'net and get
it to actually work?  I'm new at this, so any help that can be offered would
be great.  As an example, I tried to download a copy of Tetris from the 
FTP site at grind.isca.uiowa.edu, but I cannot get it to run.
