The SmartPort firmware is not in any way involved in controlling 5.25"
drives (other than setting the 3.5" drive enable line, which prevents
the control signals getting past the last 3.5" drive in the chain).

There are no documented differences in the ROM 3 disk port hardware or
firmware that would explain why a DuoDisk wouldn't work on the ROM 3.

I haven't tried it myself, so I can't confirm the problem.

Have you tried using a DuoDisk controller card rather than the disk port?
