I've had no trouble running my Bernoulli 150 with "generic" SilverLining
and/or Hard Disk Toolkit drivers. However, it does appear that
Bernoulli's driver does track caching or something, so it might well be
faster (haven't actually done any tests on this, mind you). But I'd
imagine the drive would work fine on an Apple II -- I know people that
are using them on Amigas, for example. A RamFAST would probably be the
optimal controller because I know it deals with a larger set of "weird"
devices than the Apple card and thus stands a better chance of working.

If you decide to get a 230 MB Bernoulli, you should know about a deal
that Iomega has available through Service Bureaus right now. Buy five
cartridges at $99 apiece and they give you the drive for free. (Plus you
have the option to buy additional three-packs of cartridges at $199 for
three, essentially buy-two-get-one-free). Considerably more expensive
than the ZipDrive, but more than twice the capacity, and the speed is
superior as well. Oh, and the drive also reads and writes all the
smaller sizes of Bernoulli cartridges -- there's something to be said for
standardizing.
Check with your local service bureau for more information on this offer.
Or, contact Terry Morris Productions -- they're a service bureau in CA
which has been pretty aggressive in promoting this deal online. (You order
directly from Iomega's order fulfillment house, so have no worries about
ordering from someone you've never heard of. Morris, who I used to get
the 150 MB drive, just sends you the order form, which you fax to Iomega.)
