Trying to do what? Change the world to be a better place? ;-)
Or trying to get something finished?
What you describe above isn't madness - it's something I bet
most of us have gone through already: Building your own little
customized OS that does everything you see fit, building your
own compiler (a hybrid of assembler and a more higher-level
language like C but not quite there), the "perfect editor", the
game you always wanted to play etc.
In other words: Perfectly normal for a computer geek.
Of course it's very probable that you won't finish any of the
above projects. But you will have fun doing it and that is
what matters.
