interesting hard disk discovery

I saw someone post about having trouble getting a Quantum drive with Apple
ROMs to work with a rev C SCSI card so I took my Quadra's internal drive out 
and put it in a case. It's a Quantum 230 with Apple ROMs just like the drive
in question. I tried it with the high speed SCSI equipped ROM 3 on my desk
and my spare machines, a rev C equipped ROM 01 and another 01 with a high speed
SCSI. It was chained to a Quantum 105 on the ROM 3 and the machine booted
from this drive, and was on the chain alone on the 01's, which were booted
from Appleshare. I encountered no problems at all with the drive in any of the
configurations I tried. I think the only reason Apple swaps ROMs on their
drives is to make it so that their formatter program won't work with drives
they don't supply, although there is a patch for HD SC Setup to get around it.
Also the drives' manufacturers won't honor their normal warrantees on such
drives. So as far as the problems of the original poster with the same drive, 
I would have to guess it's a terminator power problem.
I found something interesting with this drive, which was reformatted with the
version of HD SC Setup included with system 7.5 when the system was installed,
to ensure having a SCSI manager 4.3 compatible driver. The HFS volume mounted
on each IIgs, followed by a dialog saying the second volume was unrecognizable
and forcing me to eject it. I ran CSU and discovered that the Apple_partition_
map wasn't the first partition as it was on every other disk I'd looked at.
First was the Apple_HFS partition, 239 mb in size, then Apple_partition_map,
then Apple_driver43, then a 2.5K Apple_free. Kinda strange.
