The actual meaning of that message is "selected AppleTalk connection",
since one of the intended enhancements to 6.0.1 was the addition of the
Apple II Ethernet card as an Appletalk connection, what this is saying is
that the current setting in the Network CDEV isn't being found. (It would have
had, in addition to Startup GS/OS or ProDOS 8, Builtin AppleTalk or EtherTalk)

Having the AppleShare CDEV and/or Appleshare.FST installed will cause this
message to come up if there is not a slot set to "Appletalk" _or_ an
Apple II Ethernet card installed. Since no ethernet card exhists, it's not
going to find it.

In short, somehow it could be thinking to look for one, or you do not have
Appletalk selected. What I do so that I do not have to deal with the message
is disable the AppleShare CDEV so it will ignore it at boot time. Then when
I need to logon to a server I just open the actual CDEV folder, (holding down
Option when opening from Finder) and the open the AppleShare CDEV. IT will not
show up on Control Panel NDA this way but is still 100% as functional.

Check the file ATInit in the System.Setup folder. It is the one that contains
the user name, selected printer, etc. Delete it or move it away and see if
the problem still exhists. Something could have gotten changed that makes
it think it's looking for a network card in a slot instead of the built in
port. The files you need to make sure are disabled are the AppleShare CDEV and
AppleShare.FST

I know this wasn't exactly your original question....
